The short answer

If there is nowhere in the room for a desk, the usual fallback is a lap tray or the kitchen table. Pull it over your lap, work, then push it back against the wall.

It was £64.99 in white on Amazon when checked, sold through Gibbon Mounts' own storefront and dispatched by Amazon, with a black version also listed. That is roughly double the SONGMICS 60cm Z-shaped desk, which is the fair comparison, because this is what you buy instead of a tiny fixed desk when even a 60cm footprint is too much.

How the base works, and where it will not fit

The whole idea rests on the base. It is an H-shaped steel frame about 77cm long, with four swivel castors recessed into the feet rather than bolted underneath. That is why the base sits only 3cm off the floor, and why it can slide under a sofa without the wheels catching.

That 3cm figure is the one to check before buying. A sofa on tapered legs or a bed on a divan base with a valance will be fine. A sofa that sits flat on the floor, a storage ottoman bed or a bed with drawers underneath will not let the base in, and then the desk has to sit beside you rather than over you. It still works as a side table, but you lose the point of it.

The column is set 25.5cm from one end of the top, so 54.5cm of the surface overhangs the base. Gibbon Mounts quotes 52cm of usable reach over a bed or sofa. That is enough to bring a laptop over your lap on a sofa. One owner using it across a hospital-style bed found it did not reach far enough for a plate to sit centrally, which is worth knowing if the plan is meals in bed rather than a laptop on the sofa.

The gas lift

Height is adjusted by a lever under the edge of the top, from 66cm to 107cm. There are no fixed positions, so it stops wherever you release the lever.

At 66cm it sits at a comfortable height over a sofa seat. At 107cm it becomes a small standing desk, and that top figure is a real advantage over cheaper overbed tables, many of which stop closer to 100cm. For standing typing, 107cm is about right for people up to roughly 185cm, which covers most adults.

The spring is strong. Owners describe the top rising quickly once the lever is pulled, and one notes leaning over it to pull it back down when there is anything on the surface. Amazon's own review summary calls the height adjustment mixed for the same reason. The practical advice is to lift with one hand on the lever and the other steadying the top, and to lower it with both hands on the surface before you load it with anything that could slide.

What 8kg actually means

This is the number that separates this desk from a small fixed desk, and it is worth taking literally. Gibbon Mounts rates the top at 8kg.

A laptop, a mouse, a notebook, a mug and a tablet in the 34cm slot along the back edge come to perhaps 4kg. That is fine. A monitor on a stand is not, and neither is leaning your weight on the front edge while you stand. The top is 18mm thick and the column is the only support, so the limit is about stability as much as strength.

The 80 x 40cm surface is otherwise generous for this type of table. It holds a 15-inch laptop with a mouse beside it and still leaves room for a drink at the far end. Gibbon Mounts says the slot suits laptops from 33cm to 41cm wide if you prefer to prop the laptop and use a separate keyboard, although at 40cm deep the keyboard will then be close to the front edge.

Living with it

Assembly is three steps and eight screws: base to column, top to column, castors in. Owners consistently describe it as quick, although one mentions the printed instructions did not match the parts, so it is worth looking at the product photos before you start.

The bigger daily consideration is that it does not fold or collapse. Parked, it occupies a patch of floor around 77cm long at whatever height you last left it. Pushed against a wall with the base under the sofa, that is barely noticeable. In a room where the sofa sits flat on the floor, it becomes a permanent side table, which is worth knowing before you buy it as a space-saver.

Owners are broadly happy with it, with a 4.4-star average from a couple of hundred ratings. The recurring themes are that it is steadier than expected for a single column, that it rolls smoothly on hard floors, and that it gets used for more than laptops: art projects, a projector stand, a bedside table. The complaints are the strong spring and the reach across a bed.

The Gibbon Mounts desk does the sofa-desk job well, and the 107cm maximum makes it a more convincing standing desk than most overbed tables. The bigger top is welcome too.

Buy it if the room genuinely has no desk space, if you work from the sofa a couple of hours a day, or if you want a laptop surface that can be rolled to a bed during a bout of illness or a longer recovery.

Skip it if you need a monitor, if you want to rest your weight on the desk while standing, or if the furniture you want to roll it under sits flat on the floor. In those cases a small fixed desk will serve better, and the 8kg limit stops being a compromise you have to think about.

The 8kg limit and the fact it never folds away are the things to accept before buying. At around £65 it costs more than basic overbed tables, and the extra buys height range and a bigger top rather than strength.
