Privacy policy
Last updated 20 April 2026.
This policy explains what information CompactNest collects when you visit the site, why we collect it, and what rights you have under UK data protection law.
Who is the controller
CompactNest ("we", "our", "us") is the data controller for personal data processed through this website. You can reach us at privacy@compactnest.co.uk.
We are not required to appoint a Data Protection Officer, but the address above reaches the person responsible for privacy matters.
What we collect and why
Server logs and security
Our hosting provider (Cloudflare) briefly records request information: your IP address, user agent, the URL you requested, and the time of the request. This is used to serve the site, block attacks, and debug problems. These logs are discarded within hours to days depending on the log type.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a secure, functional website.
Cloudflare Web Analytics
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views and measure Core Web Vitals. It is cookieless, runs at the edge, does not fingerprint visitors, and stores no IP addresses or identifiers tied to you. It is always on.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in understanding site performance. Because it stores nothing on your device and collects no personal data, it does not require consent under UK law.
Google Analytics 4 (with your consent)
If you accept analytics cookies, we load Google Analytics 4 through Google Tag Manager. GA4 helps us understand which articles are read, where readers come from, and how the site is used in aggregate.
GA4 sets first-party cookies (_ga, _gid) and
sends event data to Google. IP addresses are truncated in the EU and UK
before storage, and we have IP anonymisation enabled. Data is shared
with Google LLC, based in the United States.
Legal basis: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by selecting "Manage cookies" at the bottom of any page.
Microsoft Clarity (with your consent)
If you accept analytics cookies, we also load Microsoft Clarity. Clarity records anonymised session interactions such as mouse movement, scroll depth, and click patterns, so we can see where layouts confuse readers or break on specific devices. Clarity masks sensitive text by default and does not record passwords, payment fields, or email inputs.
Clarity sets cookies (_clck, _clsk) and sends
session data to Microsoft Corporation in the United States.
Legal basis: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
Affiliate link clicks
When you click an affiliate link on CompactNest, we log the click server-side before redirecting you to the retailer. The recorded information is: which link was clicked, the destination retailer's domain, the page you came from, and a country code derived from your IP. No cookie is set on your device for this, and the request is stateless.
If you have granted analytics consent, this event is associated with your Google Analytics identifier so we can connect the click back to your session. If you have not consented, the click is recorded with a random, single-use identifier that cannot be linked to anything else.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in understanding which reviews help readers find useful products, balanced against the minimal and non-identifying nature of the data collected.
We do not sell, rent, or otherwise share click data with third parties. The retailer you land on will track your visit under their own privacy policy once you arrive, and we have no control over that.
Cookies
The cookies and similar storage we use, in full:
| Name | Set by | Purpose | Expiry |
|---|---|---|---|
compactnest_consent | CompactNest | Remembers your cookie choices | 180 days |
_ga | Google Analytics | Analytics (only if you consent) | 2 years |
_gid | Google Analytics | Analytics (only if you consent) | 24 hours |
_clck | Microsoft Clarity | Analytics (only if you consent) | 1 year |
_clsk | Microsoft Clarity | Analytics (only if you consent) | 1 day |
The consent cookie is strictly necessary to remember your preference and is exempt from consent requirements under PECR. All other cookies are set only after you accept.
You can change your preferences at any time using the "Manage cookies" link in the footer, or by clearing cookies for compactnest.co.uk in your browser.
Who we share data with
We use a small number of processors to run the site:
- Cloudflare, Inc. for hosting, DNS, CDN, and Web Analytics. Based in the United States with operations worldwide.
- Google LLC for Google Analytics 4, Google Tag Manager, and Google Fonts. Fonts are served from our own domain, so Google receives no page-load information from our font use. Based in the United States.
- Microsoft Corporation for Microsoft Clarity. Based in the United States.
- Amazon EU S.à r.l. and Amazon.com, Inc. when you click an Amazon affiliate link and leave our site. Amazon becomes the data controller for anything that happens on their domain.
We do not share data with advertising networks beyond the purposes above. We do not sell data. We do not operate a mailing list or run targeted advertising on the site.
International transfers
Our processors are primarily based in the United States. Transfers of personal data to the US rely on the UK extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, under which Google, Microsoft, and Cloudflare are self-certified, and on Standard Contractual Clauses where applicable.
Retention
- Server logs: retained by Cloudflare for hours to days, per their documentation.
- Cloudflare Web Analytics: aggregated and retained per Cloudflare's policy, with no personal identifiers.
- Google Analytics event data: up to 14 months.
- Microsoft Clarity recordings: up to 13 months, per Microsoft's default.
- Affiliate click events: retained in aggregate form for as long as we run the site.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:
- Ask what personal data we hold about you (right of access)
- Ask us to correct inaccurate data (rectification)
- Ask us to delete data (erasure), where applicable
- Ask us to restrict or object to processing
- Receive your data in a portable format
- Withdraw consent at any time. This does not affect the lawfulness of anything we did before you withdrew.
To exercise any of these, email privacy@compactnest.co.uk. We will respond within one month.
If you believe we have mishandled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO):
- Website: ico.org.uk
- Helpline: 0303 123 1113
We'd appreciate the chance to put things right first, but this right is yours unconditionally.
Children
CompactNest is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page when we change how the site works. The "last updated" date at the top of the page reflects the most recent revision. Significant changes will be announced in the cookie banner the next time you visit.
